Augustus Cleveland (1754-1784), an East India Company officer, was the collector of Bhagalpur in the late 18th century. Tilhakothi, a small hillock, is said to have impressed Cleveland so much that he built his residence – Cleveland House now popularly known as Tilhakothi. It has since been renamed as Rabindra Bhawan as the Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore once lived here. It is said that he wrote parts of his famous poetry collection Geetanjali here. Cleveland House has now been incorporated into the Tilkamanjhi Bhagalpur University.
